Gramvousa

The peninsula of Gramvousa occupies the northwest of Crete and near its tip it has two islands (Imeri Gramvousa and Agria Gramvousa), a good beach, an anchorage for small boats in bad weather, and the remains of a large Venetian castle. Imeri Gramvousa contains the remains of a Venetian castle (1579). The castle, although built for 3,000 men, was never involved in a major battle. The Venetians handed it over to the Turks in 1692 -- 23 years after Iraklion’s occupation. The island of Agria (wild) Gramvousa is at the end of the northwest peninsula of Crete, with the same name. Across the anchorage, at the end of the Gramvousa Peninsula is the lovely sandy beach of Balos with spectacular clear turquoise water. It is a combination of the long lasting history of the region with the impressive and unique environment of steep rocks and cliffs surrounded by the immense blue sea.that even Caribbean visitors envy this region!
