Akrotiri

The peninsula of Akrotiri is just a short distance northwest of Chania. There are the tombs of Venizelos, the headquarters of the National Resistance movement, the airport of Hania and the port of Souda. Furthermore in the area, one can find century-old small and large monasteries scattered in different places as well as the now abandoned monastic complex of the Katholikon, which is built at the end of a wild gorge. Churches, impressive caves with rich lithological and archaeological interest, historical monuments are spread in the peninsula. A reference also has to be made to the picturesque sandy beaches, all awarded with the Blue Flag and to the beautiful traditional villages.
