Sissi

Sissi is a picturesque fishing village situated on the seashore at a distance of approx. 40 kilometres from Heraklion and 25 kilometers from Aghios Nicolaos. It has a charming little port and a small sandy beach with crystal clear waters. Even though this enchanting village is small it has a well established tourist resort offering excellent accommodation facilities of various categories. Shopping and entertainment can be quite basic with mini-markets, souvenir shops, kafenions, bars and several traditional taverns serving fresh fish and local cuisine. The centre of Malia which offers a wider selection of shopping and entertainment venues, is located just 10 klms away. The beach within the port of Sissi is a small sandy beach protected by a wave-breaker and is the most central. Just 500 metres east is Boufos Beach also small but sandy. Avlaki Beach is a narrow opening between the rock formations, with a rocky surface. It is used mostly as an access to the excellent neighbouring beach of the Kalimera Kriti Hotel. There are several alternatives for sightseeing in the area like a visit to the scenic traditional village of Epano Sissi (upper Sissi) which has kept its traditional character giving the visitor a unique sense of the past. In its small taverns one can enjoy the local traditional food. The archaeological site of Malia featuring the excavations of the famous Minoan Palace can be found some 7 kilometres west and also an interesting sight in the area is the Milatos Cave with its eight entrances.
