Aghios Thomas

Aghios Thomas is a small village approx. 30 klm southwest of Heraklion and is between Psiloritis and the Dikte Mountains of Lassithi. During the Venetian era it was a large town that the Turks destroyed in 1821 and 1866. As it is said, in the past there were in the area 38 churches. Ancient Roman tombs and cisterns were discovered and due to these findings the archaeologists came to the conclusion that the ancient town of Panona was located where now stands the village. Around the village there are many caves and a beautiful wine-press. The surrounding area is covered by forestland.
